Location and physical description

It is the example of a humid forest on average altitude between 850 and 1475m , localized in the province of Diego - Suarez (Antsiranana) 7 km from Joffre Ville . The Ambre Mountain National Park is situated in a volcanic area covering approximately 300 000ha, essentially composed of basaltic rocks . There are few crater lakes : Small lake or Mahasarika, Great lake or Malio, Damn lake or Taranta, and lake Texier or Manonja .

The climate

Humid tropical type microclimate with important annual precipitations (3585mm) at the Forest Station of Roussettes with a maximum in January and February. From 1200 m of altitude, mountain tropical climate characterized by strong precipitations due to the exposure to the winds and low winter temperatures.

The flora

Very rich florabecause of an important rain rate . This rainy forest with indeciduous leaves presents a great interest and let discover various form of vegetations and great trees .:
- the Canarium Madagascariense ( local name " Ramy " that gives off a strong odor of turpentine) is used in the traditional pharmacopoeia ,
- the Chrysophyllum" Famelona " used to treat chest pains ,
- the " Manary " used in the construction,
- the " Rotra " gives comestible fruits , favourite treats of some lemurs,
The Ficus with fruit loaded branches used as support to orchids such the great Angraecum Eburneum among many varieties.
( Bulbophyllum).
Ferns " Birds nest" and arborescent ferns are common as palm trees and Pandanus.

The fauna

The fauna is typical to Malagasy humid forests , but some species are localized to the Ambre Mountain area .
Different lemur species are found there :
- the diurnal lemur such the Lemur Coronatus and the Lemur fulvus sanfordi only visible in northern reserves of the island.
- the nocturnal lemurs : five species : the Microcébus rufus one of the smallest primates of the World that approximately weighs 50 grams . The Phaner furcifer and the Lepilemur Septentrionalis identifiable with their characteristic shouts during the hot season. With perseverance and wait the Aye Aye ( Daubentonia madagscariensis) can be seen near the " Ramy ".
Among the carnivores :
The Fosa (Cryptoprocta ferox) the largest carnivore of the island lives mainly the night, the Galidia elegans dambrensis , the Indian Civette -Viverricula indica - formerly imported specie for the exploitation of its musk has adapted with the environment . The Potamoecherus Porcus also widespread in the park.

the Tenrec , a kind of hedgehog living on small vertebrates and invertebrates (snails, worms.), Madagascar flying fox (Roussetus madagscariensis)with its impressive wingspread executing its acrobatic dances at nightfall .
A great variety of birds such the crested Ibis , the land Rollier . The forest gray blue and orange-colored blackbirds (Pseudocossyphus sharpei eryphrocotus) or the Cuvier water rail (Drislimnas cuvieri )with its brief and strident shouts. Blue pigeons (alectroenas madagascariensis) resting on high dead branches .The Pygargue of Madagascar (Haliaeetus vociféroides) with its wingspan of 2,20 m long makes it the greater bird of prey of the island . It lives essentially on freshwater and saltwater fishes ;
Reptiles and batrachians are also well represented :
- the Brookesia (Brookesia tuberculata) one of the smallest chameleons of the world which length exceeds hardly 3 cm !
- the rare Skink (Zonosaurus haroldmeiri) that can only be found in the Ambre Mountain .
- The Uroplatus alluaudia) using its flat physiognomy as a camouflage cannot be seen easily through branches,
Butterflies : about 36 species some of them of a rare beauty.
The leech called " Dinta " that fortunately represents no danger for the man
