The city of MAHAJANGA , known as " the city of the flowers " is located on the peninsula between the Mozambique Channel and the right bank of the Betsiboka river. Sun crushed town, it is also the most important port on the western Malagasy coast.
The cosmopolitan population is strongly marked by Islam.
The cornice

Walk along Poincaré Boulevard and in cornice gives the strollers the opportunity to appreciate magnificent sunset , and to lovers to reach the love garden situated at the point of the Caîman that dominates all the bay of Bombetoka . When continuing further one arrives to a vestige of port project : the « Port Sneider » and after it the tourist village

Amborovy beach

Situated at 10 km from the city , it is a wide beach where it is agreeable to bathe, and also to discover fishermen villages with their pirogues .

The red cirque

When leaving the seaside , one suddenly arrives in the centre of small laterit hill where the erosion has made its work by diging small furrows through which can be seen rock layers of different color forming a range of several shades .

The sacred lake of Mangatsa

It is a small lake with clear waters where sacred fishes multiplied without being disturb , fishing is not permitted and the visitor has to feed them .To go ther , you have to take the track which skirts round the airfield .

Katsepy

Katsepy is an other fisherman village perched on the foreland opposite to Bombetoka bay with its lighthouse from where one has a incomparable panoramic view on the bay and the Mozambique channel .

The "Doany" of Manongarivo

It is the mecca of the Sakalava of Boina cult where a ceremony of relic baths is celebrated each year.

The "grand pavois"

The Grand Pavois is also an other seaside resort with its quiet sea and its fine sand. Accessible with tourism car without difficulty.

The river Betsiboka

Navigation on the Betsiboka can be done either with commercial coaster or speed boat the trip being spread over several days with stops at Marovoay, then Maroala and finally at Ambatoboeny.

Marovoay

Situated at 94 km from Majunga.
Ancient capital of the Sakalava of Boina Kingdom. It plays an important economic role in the agricultural sector with its vast plain managed for the intensive culture of rice. The city benefits from an exceptional way of communication towards the Mozambique Channel.

Ampijoroa forest station

Ampijoroa forest station and Ankarafantsika national park are situated in the province of Majunga. The reserve is formed by a continental and maritime calcareous intrusion of the average and inferior Cretaceous that stands at 250 m above the surrounding plains . The original forest covers a great part of the reserve.

Anjohibe caves

Situated at 72 km to the north east of Majunga.
Caves are situated in the most southern part of the Mahavo sandy plaeau that borders the Mahajamba bay . They are accessible by a seasonal track and there is a possibility of camping at the entry of the cave however it is recommended to stock up on waters at one of the waterhole of surrounding areas.
Anjohibe caves have a reputation in all the island for its successions of halls namely the widest called Casteret(35 m x 8 m )trimmed with varied chalk stones , and to add picturesqueness to the whole some thorny rich thickets remained steady on scree areas corresponding to the fall of ancient hall or galleries because of the erosion

Maevatanana

Maevatanana : at 329 km from Tana or 249 km from Majunga
The village where life is sweet. However it is the place where the temperature is the highest of the island with its sister Miandrivazo more to the south .
The village of Sakalava origin is rather Merina nowadays . With its resources and goldfield exploitations , it is also an agricultural city. Formerly Maevatanana was a favourite place for crocodiles hunting .
The tumultuous Fall of the Betsiboka at 22 km can be admired from the bridge that spans the river carrying down all the laterite when it crosses the RN 4.

Antsohihy

Antsohihy is situated at 130 km from Port Bergé.
Place where formerly the Sohihy , a Rubiacea family tree used for the shipbuilding grew in abundance . Antsohihy is a road and fluvial communication center between next cities :to the north Ambanja, Befandriana and Bealanana to the east, Port Bergé to the south, and Analalava to the west .

Boeny bay

The Boeny bay and Ansoeheribory island :
This magnificent tourist site accessible by boat was during centuries an important trading post which vestiges can yet be seen there .

Port Bergé

Port Bergé « Vaovao » :the new Port Bergé.
The city has been rebuilt on height after the floods have destroyed the ancient city situated on Bemarivo banks. It is an agricultural region where cotton, tobacco, peanut are cultivated on the Bemarivo and the Sofia banks .
A walk more in depth in this beautiful region where grow among lakes and waterways, Kapok trees , giant mango trees , satrana ...requires the service of a guide.
